Policy answer vs database answer
Most direct-to-consumer support traffic is the same handful of questions repeated forever. “Where is my order?” “Did it ship?” “Is it back in stock?” “What’s the return window on this?” “Do you ship to Germany?” Studies of e-commerce ticket volume put order-status alone at north of 30% of contacts. Add stock checks, returns, and shipping policy questions and you’re looking at the majority of what your inbox has to answer in any given week.
These tickets aren’t hard. They’re tedious. An agent has to flip between your helpdesk, the Shopify admin, the carrier site, and your returns portal — for a question that has a single correct answer sitting in a single Shopify field. The cost is twofold: you pay agent salaries to do the lookups your store could already do on its own, and customers wait hours for an answer that should have arrived in seconds.
Without Shopify connected
The bot can only quote what’s in your help center. Generic. Not actionable. The customer asks for a human.
With Shopify connected
The bot reads the live order in your store and quotes it. Concrete. Actionable. Ticket closed.
Most support chatbots on the market read static knowledge — they’re glorified FAQ search. NebulaHex reads static knowledge andqueries your live store mid-conversation, so the answer the customer sees is the answer that’s true in your store right now, not the answer that was true the last time someone updated a doc.
02
11 store actions, each toggleable
When the bot is connected to your Shopify store, it can do eleven distinct things in real time, each toggleable from the integration card. You decide which ones to enable — turn on the lookups you want, leave the rest off, change your mind later.
lookup_orderLook up an order
Pull an order by number or customer email. Returns status, items, ship date, carrier, tracking.
search_productsSearch the catalog
Find products by name, type, or attribute. Returns matches with variants and pricing.
get_product_detailsGet product details
Full variants, options, images, descriptions for a single product. Including custom fields if you mapped them.
check_inventoryCheck live inventory
Real-time stock count for a specific variant. Tells the truth, never bluffs.
get_recommendationsRecommend products
Surface related items, popular pairings, or use-case matches from your catalog.
browse_collectionBrowse a collection
List products in a collection — sale items, new arrivals, holiday picks, whatever you’ve curated.
add_to_cartGenerate a cart link
When the customer is ready to buy, the bot drops a one-click cart link with the right variant pre-filled.
customer_ordersPull customer history
Once a returning customer identifies themselves, the bot can list their past orders without making them dig.
validate_discountValidate a discount code
Check whether a discount code is real, valid, and currently active before promising savings.
get_store_policiesQuote store policies
Returns, refunds, shipping, privacy policies pulled directly from your Shopify settings.
get_shipping_ratesCalculate shipping rates
Available shipping methods and costs for a customer’s destination, pulled live from your store.
The store data the bot reads stays inside the conversation. It is not used to retrain models. It is not pooled across customers. The connection credentials themselves are encrypted before storage, and the bot only fetches the specific record relevant to the question being asked — it doesn’t sweep your store and ingest everything.
03
How to connect
You connect Shopify the way you connect any modern app: through a one-click OAuth flow on the official Shopify login screen. Three steps, total.
Click Connect on the Shopify card
In your bot’s Integrations tab, click Connect on the Shopify card and enter your store URL.
Authorize through Shopify’s login screen
You’re sent to your Shopify store’s own OAuth screen. Sign in as you normally would, review the requested scopes, click Authorize.
Toggle the actions you want enabled
Back in NebulaHex, each of the 11 store actions has its own toggle. Defaults are set conservatively — the bot starts useful but never writes anything you didn’t enable.
Because authorization happens through Shopify’s own login screen, you never share your Shopify password with NebulaHex. You can revoke access from inside Shopify or from the Disconnect button on the integration card at any time. When you disconnect, the bot stops accessing the store immediately and the stored credentials are removed.

Real scenarios where this earns its keep
A direct-to-consumer apparel brand
You run a clothing brand on Shopify, mostly through your own storefront with paid social driving traffic. Support volume is dominated by sizing questions, "where’s my order," and exchange requests. Your two-person team is drowning during launch weeks. With NebulaHex, the bot handles "where’s my order" with real status in seconds, answers sizing from your size guide, and walks customers through your exchange policy. Your agents go from being a search engine for tracking links to being the brand voice on the conversations that matter.
A boutique store with a tight team
You run a small boutique on Shopify, the kind where the founder still answers most emails. You don’t have a support team. You have you, and the time you spend on support is time you aren’t spending on product or marketing. The bot becomes your second self at the storefront. It knows your products, checks the order, captures leads when someone wants a restock alert. You wake up to a clean inbox with two real questions instead of forty status checks.
A multi-channel seller
You sell on Shopify and also have a presence on Instagram, sometimes WhatsApp, and marketplaces. Customers DM you on whichever platform they discovered you on. Each platform has its own inbox. NebulaHex unifies the chat side — you connect Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and your website widget to the same bot. Every surface gets the same Shopify-aware agent. A customer who DMs Instagram with an order number gets the same real status they would on your website.
A growing brand pushing into new markets
Past the founder-as-support phase. Small support team, active community, starting to ship internationally. Volume climbing faster than headcount. NebulaHex sits in front of your team as the first line. It quotes shipping cost and timing for each region you’ve documented. It checks orders for international customers. It handles the long tail of "do you ship to X?" questions. Because the bot is grounded in your actual store, the answers sound like your brand.
05
Where Shopify fits
Shopify is the underlying commerce platform for a very large share of independent online businesses. The catalog, inventory, customer record, order, fulfillment, and shipping data your bot needs to answer most support questions is already structured and already correct inside Shopify. You don’t need to migrate it anywhere or build a side database — the answers to your customers’ questions are sitting in a system you already pay for.
The Shopify Admin API is what makes this possible. It’s the same API ecosystem that powers headless storefronts, ERP integrations, and the wider third-party app marketplace. Recent platform updates have leaned heavily into supporting AI-aware tooling and stronger authentication models, which is part of why a Shopify-connected chatbot in 2026 is a meaningfully better experience than the Shopify chat widgets of a few years ago. NebulaHex uses the official OAuth connection flow and only the scopes needed for the store actions you turn on.
If you’re already a Shopify merchant, this is the path of least resistance to credible AI support. Your data is already in the right shape. Your customers are already on your storefront. The integration takes minutes, not weeks.
06
Why NebulaHex over the alternatives
There is no shortage of chat widgets that promise to answer customer questions. Most of them are wrong about something important.
Pure FAQ search bots
- Read your help center
- Quote paragraphs back
- Can’t see a real order
- Customer asks for human in 2 questions
Flow-builder bots
- Drag-and-drop conversation trees
- Smart in demos, brittle in production
- Real customers don’t follow the tree
- Maintaining the tree is its own job
Generic AI agents
- Fluent, confident, often wrong
- Guess instead of look up
- Customers spot it immediately
- No grounding, no audit trail
NebulaHex
- Grounded in your knowledge first
- Live data via 11 Shopify actions
- Escalates honestly when unsure
- Every answer traceable to a source
NebulaHex is built to be honest. The bot grounds answers in your knowledge sources first, escalates when it isn’t confident, and uses live integrations like Shopify to get specifics from the source of truth instead of guessing. You see every conversation in the inbox. You can run test suites against your bot to catch regressions. You can see exactly which knowledge source produced each answer. The platform is designed for support teams that care whether the answer is right, not just whether it sounds right.
You also keep control. You choose which Shopify actions are enabled. You choose which channels are live. You choose when to escalate. You choose your model preferences and can bring your own Anthropic or OpenAI key on the higher plans. The bot works for your business, not the other way around.
07
Trust & security
Your store data is sensitive. Order details, customer addresses, purchase history — these are things customers give you in a transaction, not for resale or training. We treat them that way.
All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Connections to Shopify use the official OAuth 2.0 flow, so your password is never shared with NebulaHex and you can revoke access from either side at any time. The integration acts on your store only with the scopes you authorized, and only when a conversation triggers a specific lookup — the bot doesn’t sweep your store data into a side database.
Webhook deliveries from your bot to your other systems are signed so you can verify they came from us. Inside your workspace, role-based access controls let you decide who on your team can connect integrations, manage bots, or only view conversations. Your store data is never used to train AI models. See our privacy policy and terms for the full posture.

One OAuth click away
The version of your support team that doesn’t have to look up tracking numbers anymore is one OAuth click away.
