Answer Instagram DMs automatically with AI

Forty-three new DMs before breakfast. Half are “is this still in stock?”, a quarter are “where’s my order?”, a few are sizing questions, two are press, and one person is asking the same thing they asked yesterday. NebulaHex puts your AI agent on the receiving end of every DM your account gets — the routine ones answered immediately, only the ones that need a human reach you.

Why Instagram DMs became a support channel

Instagram was built for photos and reels, but the conversation that happens around those reels is now where the buying decision lives. Someone watches a product video, taps the profile, and DMs “do you ship to Spain?” before they ever click through to a website. Get them an answer in seconds, they buy. Get them an answer in a day, they’ve already been converted by the next account in their feed.

Three things changed at the same time:

Volume exploded

Comments under a single viral post produce hundreds of DMs in an afternoon. A creator launching a product blows past human capacity in minutes.

Expectations shifted

Customers treat brand DMs like support tickets, not fan messages. They expect the speed of a chat widget, not the patience of email.

Intent ran high

Instagram traffic is high-intent. The customer self-selected by following you, watching content, or tapping a story link. Letting that wait in unread is the most expensive mistake.

The painful part is that most of those DMs are not interesting questions. They’re the same five or six questions, asked thousands of times, in slightly different words. Sizing. Stock. Shipping windows. Returns policy. Order tracking. Wholesale enquiries. Whether you ship to a particular country. None of those need a human. All of them used to get one.

What NebulaHex does for Instagram

NebulaHex puts your AI agent on the receiving end of every Instagram DM your account gets, so the moment a message arrives it’s read, understood, and answered using the knowledge you’ve given the bot. The reply is written in your voice. It cites a real answer from your content, not a generic chatbot platitude.

One bot, every channel

You build the bot once. You upload your shipping policy, your sizing guides, your returns rules, your FAQ, your brand voice, your wholesale terms. The same bot answers on Instagram, your website, WhatsApp, and every other channel you connect. No separate “Instagram bot” to keep in sync. One brain, every surface.

The agent is grounded in your knowledge, which means it doesn’t hallucinate policies you don’t have. It doesn’t invent shipping costs. If you haven’t told it about a topic, it says so honestly and offers to hand the conversation to a human, instead of guessing. That trust property is the difference between an automation that helps your customers and one that quietly damages your brand.

When you connect your Shopify store as well, the bot moves from answering policy questions to answering order-specific ones. “Where’s my order?” stops being a question that takes a human five minutes to look up — the agent reads the customer’s order in real time, replies with the carrier and the tracking number, and resolves the conversation in one round-trip.

03

How to connect

Instagram messaging runs on Meta’s developer platform. Connecting it takes three pieces: an Instagram Business or Creator account, a Facebook Page that account is linked to, and a Meta App with the Instagram messaging product enabled. NebulaHex walks you through each step from inside your bot’s Channels tab.

1

Convert to Business or Creator

In Instagram app

If your Instagram account is still set to Personal, switch it to Business or Creator from the Instagram app. Free, one-time, takes 30 seconds.

2

Link to a Facebook Page

On Meta

In Meta Business Suite, link the Instagram account to a Facebook Page. This is what gives the account programmatic messaging access.

3

Create a Meta App

On Meta

At developers.facebook.com, create an app and enable the Instagram messaging product. From the App, generate a Page Access Token and copy the Page ID.

4

Paste credentials

In NebulaHex

Open your bot’s Channels tab. On the Instagram DMs card, paste the Page Access Token and Page ID, then click Connect.

5

Verify the webhook

On Meta

Back in your Meta App, point the Instagram webhook at the URL and verify token NebulaHex shows you. Send a test DM and watch it land.

That’s the whole connection. Every message your account receives flows into NebulaHex in real time and your bot starts replying. There’s no per-message setup, no extra plumbing, no scheduled sync — the channel is live from the first DM after connect.

Send Test panel. Each channel card has a built-in test message tool. Enter an Instagram user ID, click Send, and confirm the message goes through before going public. Errors surface inside the card so you fix them before customers see them.

04

What the bot can do on Instagram

Once Instagram is connected, your agent does the things a great support teammate would do — except instantly and at any volume.

Answers from your knowledge

Sizing, materials, care, shipping, returns, wholesale, anything you’ve uploaded — answered in your brand voice with citations to real sources.

Live Shopify lookups

"Where’s my order?" gets a real status with carrier and tracking, pulled from your store in real time. "Is this in stock?" gets actual inventory.

Lead capture

When someone is interested but not ready, the bot captures email + question + timestamp into your lead store. Optionally pushed to HubSpot, announced in Slack.

Seamless escalation

When the customer asks for a person, or the question is outside the bot’s confidence, the thread lands in your real-time inbox with full context.

80+ languages

A customer who DMs in Portuguese gets a Portuguese reply. Spanish, French, Arabic, Hindi — the bot replies in the customer’s language without separate bots per market.

Always on

3am, weekends, holidays. Instagram is global by default and your customers are not all in your timezone. The bot covers every hour you can’t.

05

Real use cases

🛍️

Boutique launching a new collection

Drop launches Tuesday. By Thursday, 300 unread DMs — half "is this in stock in M?" half "when does this ship to the UK?" With NebulaHex + Shopify connected, every stock question gets a real inventory answer, every shipping question gets your actual policy, every "where’s my order?" gets resolved. Your team only sees the DMs that are actually about something.

Launch traffic doesn’t outrun reply speed
🎬

Creator running a paid launch

100K follower account, a product going on sale Friday. You spend your week filming, not answering "how do I order?" 400 times. The bot answers the order link question, the shipping question, the discount code question, the country shipping question — and routes the rare genuinely-personal DM to your inbox where you reply when you have a moment.

Launch sells through, DMs don’t become a second job
🎁

Viral campaign with high comment-to-DM funnel

You ran a giveaway. The post hit explore. 5000 comments. 1000 DMs asking how to enter, when winners are announced, whether the prize ships internationally. The bot answers all of those off the campaign rules, captures emails of anyone wanting the post-campaign discount, escalates only the people flagging a real issue.

No "I never heard back" brand stories
🤝

Small support team on multiple channels

Two support agents. You used to keep Instagram on a phone on the side desk because no one wanted to log in from desktop. Replies were inconsistent. With NebulaHex, Instagram DMs land in the same unified inbox as your widget, WhatsApp, and Messenger threads. Same handoff workflow, same agent display names, same quality.

The phone goes back in a drawer

06

Where Instagram messaging fits in Meta’s platform

Instagram’s messaging APIs are part of Meta’s developer platform. They’re designed for Instagram Professional accounts — the Business and Creator account types — rather than personal Instagram accounts, consistent with how the platform treats other commerce features. The same Meta for Developers documentation that covers Messenger and WhatsApp Business covers Instagram messaging.

Behind the scenes, the platform sends new DMs to a webhook your application registers, and your application sends replies back through the API. The verify token NebulaHex shows you during setup is the handshake step that proves to Meta that the webhook belongs to you. Once that handshake succeeds, the connection is live. You don’t interact with the API directly — NebulaHex handles every part of that conversation on your behalf — but the channel is built on Meta’s standard, audited messaging infrastructure rather than a screen-scraping shortcut. That’s the difference between a connection that survives Instagram’s policy changes and one that breaks the next time the app updates.

07

Why NebulaHex over the alternatives

You have other choices. You could hire someone to live in your DMs. You could glue together a no-code Instagram automation that fires keyword-based replies. You could buy an enterprise customer-engagement platform that costs more per month than your stock budget.

Live in your DMs

  • Sleep deprivation
  • 3am replies get missed
  • Inconsistent voice across agents
  • Doesn’t scale past one person

Keyword automation

  • Triggers on exact words
  • Brittle when phrasing varies
  • No real product knowledge
  • Embarrassing wrong replies

Enterprise platform

  • Costs more than your stock budget
  • Sales-call gate to start
  • Optimized for call centers
  • Year-long implementations

NebulaHex

  • Knowledge-grounded AI, not keywords
  • One bot across every channel
  • Human handoff built-in, not bolted on
  • Free forever plan, no card required

NebulaHex is a knowledge-grounded AI agent — meaning the answers come from content you’ve given it, not from generic training data and not from hardcoded keyword rules. That single property makes the difference between a bot that says something embarrassing and a bot you can leave on the front line of your brand. The agent doesn’t pretend to know things it doesn’t know. It hands those over.

The handoff to a real agent isn’t an afterthought — it’s built into the product, with a real-time inbox, sound notifications, agent display names, timeout management, and the entire conversation context surfaced to whichever teammate picks up the thread. AI first, human when it matters.

08

Trust & security

Your Instagram connection is sensitive. The token your bot uses to send DMs has the power to speak as your brand, and your customer conversations are the kind of thing you can’t let leak. NebulaHex treats it that way.

Connection credentials, including the Page Access Token from Meta, are encrypted before they’re stored — the encryption is applied to the value itself, not just to the surrounding traffic. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Outbound integrations use OAuth 2.0 wherever the provider supports it. Webhooks coming back from external systems are signed and verified.

Access inside your workspace is role-based. Owners and Admins can connect and disconnect channels, Editors can change bot content but not channel credentials, Viewers can only read. Disconnecting from NebulaHex revokes our access to your account immediately.

We don’t use your conversation data to train AI models. Your conversations are yours. The knowledge sources you upload power your bot’s answers, not anyone else’s. See our privacy policy and terms for the full posture.

09

Connect Instagram to your bot in minutes

Most teams have an Instagram bot live in their account in under fifteen minutes — five minutes to spin up the bot and load your knowledge, ten minutes to convert and link your Instagram account if it’s not already Business or Creator, and a couple of minutes to paste the Page ID and access token into the Instagram card and run a test.

Your inbox fills up either way

The only question is whether someone — or something — is answering. Your first DM is replied to automatically the moment the connection is live.
